The Region

With daily Ryanair flights at convenient times and fantastically low prices from London Stansted to Ancona Falconara Airport it’s a great time to visit the Marche either for the first time or a return trip and enjoy the real Italy.

Marche (pronounced Markay) lies on the eastern side of Italy between the Adriatic sea and the Apennine mountains.

For those looking for a piece of Italy that offers a real alternative to Tuscany, and Umbria the Marche probably more than elsewhere in Italy really is the region where time has stood still. Where the local people make you welcome and service is never far away.

Time To Go

With so much to see and do the seasons and the climate suit the Marche very well. As you would expect the hottest time to visit is during July and August when some beaches in popular areas can become busy. August is traditionally the time when Italians take their holiday and move out of the cities and head for the coast, often returning to the same hotel and beach year after year. With over 180km of Adriatic coastline and some 26 seaside resorts there is something for everyone from the quiet to the busier resort.

As we visit the various seaside resorts we place a report on this site for you with our recommendations along with the ones (if any) to watch. By going a few miles inland during July and August you can benefit from the cool refreshing soft breezes of the island. Other great times to visit would be in May, June and September with those long warm sunny days, blue skies and a gentle breeze to cool you down.

The Futures Bright, the Future really is Orange!

The Touring Club Italiano has now awarded nine of its prestigious "Orange Flag" awards to Marche towns. Of the 63 Bandiere Arancioni Touring given to small inland comuni across Italy in recognition of the quality of what they offer the tourist while not sacrificing the environment, a total of nine flutter over Marche towns.

The scheme was launched by the TCI, Italy's leading independent tourism association, in 1999 to give an incentive to smaller corners, away from the country's more well-known coastal resorts, who take their visitors seriously. In 2001 the marchigiani comuni of Genga, Monterubbiano and Sarnano were given the Orange Flag, joined in July, 2002 by Corinaldo, Ripatransone, Mercatello sul Metauro and San Ginesio. In 2003 Mondavio and Ostra were added to the list. Towns that gain the award are allowed to fly the flag for a two-year period.
